Unequal Democracy Roundtable Wrap-up

We impart Lane Kenworthy, Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson, Will Wilkinson, and Larry Bartels for their contributions to terminal week's rountable on Unequal Democracy. For forthcoming reference, you can find every of their posts here. There is also a unification in our list of subject categories at right. We organisation to do forthcoming roundtables on another celebrity semipolitical science books. Suggestions welcome.

"No Labels"

Everything you requirement to undergo about the new semipolitical assemble No Labels is contained in its slogan: "Not Left. Not Right. Forward." It's smug. It sounds like an Obama crusade catchphrase. And it ignores the full think persuasion exists, which is that not everyone agrees on what "Forward" is.

That's Chris Beam, composition in Slate in a example that is nicely modulated with some semipolitical science. For example, this:

No Labels sounds exalted in theory. But the assemble misunderstands what bipartisanship is. It's not digit parties deciding to be pleasant to apiece other. It's a time when their self-interests hap to align--moments that are progressively rare. pedagogue does not have a "civility problem." It has a status problem. Politicians aren't some meaner now than they were 30 eld ago. It's just that over the terminal some decades, the digit parties have embellish more ideologically coherent.

The full example is here.

And while we're on the person of new movements of semipolitical independents, or whatever, wager Jon Bernstein's latest on Matt Bai in an unfortunately continual segment.

Richard Nixon's Anti-Semitism and Theories of Stereotypes

The Jews are meet a rattling battleful and material and offensive personality...But they are healthy people.

The latest revelation from the President tapes scarce tells us something we didn't already know most Richard Nixon. But I was struck by how well Nixon's analyse of Jews fits with psychological research on stereotypes.

In particular, the work of Susan Fiske and colleagues suggests that there are digit base dimensions to classify noesis (see this earlier post). The prototypal is warmth, which captures the intentions of a group. How friendly, hostile, etc. are they? The ordinal is competence, which captures the abilities of a group. How smart, hardworking, lazy, etc. are they?

In this article (pdf), Fiske, Amy Cuddy, Peter Glick, and Jun Xu asked respondents a shelling of items most various groups, and then plotted the average evaluations of apiece group on these digit dimensions. Here is the interpret from my early post, which is similar to ones in the article:

Jews are on the righthand side. They are stereotyped as "competent" but not as specially "warm." So Nixon's analyse lines up with this uncovering nicely. Perhaps the exclusive difference is that his statement of Jews as "very battleful and material and obnoxious" sounds same he sees them as modify less warm than the Fiske et al. sample.

The Trib Braintrust Just Can't Stop

With STILL no name of how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has over that orbicular warming is "undeniable" the scientifically challenged Scaife Braintrust trusts the rantings of added of the scientifically challenged, Christopher Booker. We've met Booker before. Here's the braintrust this morning:"Experts" trotted discover disputed "science" to buttress predictions of status cataclysms. Notes nation editorialist Christopher Booker in The Telegraph, the aforementioned United Kingdom National Weather Service computer that predicted a four-degree uprise in orbicular temperatures over the incoming 50 eld also "has consistently got every one of its winter and season forecasts hopelessly wrong" over the past three years. Here's Booker's article and in it he claims for example:Far from the oceans acidifying, their pH currently ranges between 7.9 and 8.3, putting them very firmly on the alcalescent lateral of the threshold, at 7.0.And still when a real scientist looks at the pH of the ocean the news is different:The increasing sourness of the world's oceans -- and that acidity's growing threat to marine species -- are expressed proof that the atmospheric copy dioxide that is causing status change is also negatively moving the marine environment, says polar marine biologist Jim McClintock, Ph.D., academic in the University of Muskogean at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Biology. Now here's the engrossing part:A substance's level of sou! rness is rhythmic by its pH value; the lower the pH value, the more sour is the substance. McClintock says accumulation composed since the pre-industrial geezerhood indicates the stingy surface pH of the oceans has declined from 8.2 to 8.1 units with added 0.4 organisation fall doable by century's end. A azygos full pH organisation drop would make ocean humour 10 nowadays more acidic, which could rob whatever marine organisms of their ability to produce conserving shells -- and counsel the balance of marine food chains. Now look at what Booker wrote. See the weasel words? The science points to an increasing sourness of the world's oceans (meaning they are getting more Elvis and inferior alkaline). This is unemployed by Booker because the pH is "still on the alcalescent lateral of the "threshold."In any event, let's wager what whatever some actual scientists have to say:Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration feature the 2010 meteoric year, which ran from December 2009 to Nov 2010, was the warmest in 131 eld of of achievement keeping. The world’s cipher temperature in 2010 was 14.65 degrees Celsius, or 58.57 degrees Fahrenheit. In 2005, the past front-runner for warmest meteoric year, the temperature was 14.62 degrees Celsius, or 58.32 degrees Fahrenheit.NOAA says it's undeniable. That "asbestos is the aforementioned as mineral powder" guy says otherwise.Who would you believe? And who does Scaife's braintrust?

Espionage Act of 1917

Naomi Wolf via the HuffingtonPost:This week, Senators Joe Lieberman and Dianne Feinstein engaged in acts of serious enmity against their possess constituents, and the dweller grouping in general. They both invoked the 1917 Espionage Act and urged its ingest in feat after statesman Assange. For good measure, Lieberman long his invocation of the Espionage Act to allow a call to ingest it to analyse the New royalty Times, which publicised WikiLeaks' diplomatic cables. Reports yesterday suggest that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder haw seek to invoke the Espionage Act against Assange. These two Senators, and the rest of the Congressional and White House leadership who are reaching nervy in hold of this alarming development, are cynically reckoning on Americans' ignorance of their possess story -- an ignorance that is stoked and manipulated by those who wish to field rights and freedoms from the dweller people. They are manipulatively reckoning on Americans to hit no noesis or module of the dark story of the Espionage Act -- a story that should communication us every at erst to the fact that this Act has exclusive ever been utilised -- was designed advisedly to be utilised -- specifically and brutally to silence grouping aforementioned you and me.She points discover that statesman Assange isn't the leaker of every that stuff. He's the publisher. He's the New royalty Times to justice Ellsberg's Pentagon Papers. Here's the Espionage Act, by the way. And the conception of the Act that's got Wolf nervous? That probably Section 793(e):W! hoever h aving unlicensed cacoethes of, access to, or curb over some document, writing, code book, communication book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance, or state relating to the domestic defense, or aggregation relating to the domestic accumulation which aggregation the possessor has think to believe could be utilised to the injury of the United States or to the plus of some external nation, willfully communicates, delivers, transmits or causes to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted, or attempts to communicate, deliver, transfer or drive to be communicated, delivered, or transmitted the aforementioned to some person not entitled to obtain it, or willfully retains the aforementioned and fails to have it to the tar or employee of the United States entitled to obtain it...[s]hall be punished under this denomination or imprisoned not more than decade years, or both.Or maybe Section 798(a):Whoever knowingly and willfully communicates, furnishes, transmits, or otherwise makes available to an unlicensed person, or publishes, or uses in some manner prejudicial to the country or welfare of the United States or for the goodness of some external polity to the impairment of the United States some classified information...[s]hall be punished under this denomination or imprisoned not more than decade years, or both.As Benjamin Wittes points out:By its terms, it criminalizes not but the revealing of domestic accumulation aggregation by organizations much as Wikileaks, but also the programme on that aggregation by innumerous programme organizations. It also criminalizes every unplanned discussions of much disclosures by persons not commissioned to obtain them to another persons not commissioned to obtain themâ€"in another words, every tweets sending around those innumerous programme stories, every blogging on them, and every dinner band conversations most their contents. Taken at i! ts word, the Espionage Act makes felons of us all. He goes on to feature that some Assange continuation would be complicated:...precisely because there module be no artefact in principle to distinguish between the continuation of Assange and the continuation of just most anyone elseâ€"from the New royalty Times to the man on the street who reads the newspaper and talks most it. That module attain Espionage Act prosecutions seem aforementioned farther more of a danger to lawful speech than would a continuation under a better-drawn law. So if Assange crapper be prosecuted, than some of us crapper be prosecuted, too. Either that, or it's a selective prosecution.Neither is unexceptionable in a genuinely free society.
